Not all Wanderers are Lost
Ross Radich loves to travel and has done plenty of it. As 'one who lived nowhere and was available to travel anywhere', he visited most of the planet. On finding himself with no home, just a TV and a cat called Nelson Mandela, Ross, with no qualifications, decided he wanted a job with no responsibilities. He got one with no training. He nearly resigned but his daughter advised him to enjoy a free overseas trip first. So, using the quality of toilets as a grading system, he travelled the world, causing chaos as he required workers to work, refused to inspect a bulldozer suspended above him and realised nobody sat next to him on planes.Filled with hilarious observations on overseas culture, attitudes, people he met and the abuse of rental cars, this is the diary of that rare creature, a happy man who truly loves his job.

Medieval Wanders and Wonders: Understanding Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago
Those who have walked the Camino will know just how compelling is the magic to be found along this way. In Medieval Wanders and Wonders Kate Simons delves into the drama that can be sensed in glorious cathedrals and mysterious religious houses, the thrills shared by fellow walkers and the triumph of arriving in Santiago de Compostela. But, having gazed upon magnificent art and experienced the vast Spanish skies, do pilgrims question the significance of James' holy bones, the influence the saints wrought on western civilization or the peculiarity of medieval pilgrimage? By examining the mysteries, sometimes grisly, sometimes delightful, of witches, heresy, obsolete religious practices and knights Kate attempts to answer these questions. She also provides personal reflections and anecdotes from her own Camino walk and subsequent trips to northern Spain undertaken with her husband. As well as asking deep questions, Medieval Wanders and Wonders offers insight into the nature of pilgrimage and the curiosities and marvels of medieval Spain.

Keep On Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea
Today’s fast-changing, globalised world is challenging thousands of years of received wisdom and ideas about Western society. The idea of Ancient Greece as being the cradle of civilisation is increasingly being called into question, not only by archaeological findings, but also by younger generations. As the author and her husband planned a series of sailing trips around the eastern Mediterranean, their children’s question “Why Greece?” inspired the author to investigate why Ancient Greece is so important – or indeed whether it is really still important at all.Readers of this book are introduced to the lasting influence of Ancient Greece through stories from ancient, medieval and modern times, enlivened by accounts of the author’s sailing adventures and are helped along with a large number of citations, maps and photos. This book aspires not only to entertain, but also to inspire, and to reflect on the ongoing impact of Ancient Greek ideas on today’s world.

How We Put an ‘e’ in Whiskey
Have you ever wondered how whiskey came about? It has roots that go a long way into the past, and in this book, the author tells us how the various discoveries came together – first of all to obtain alcohol from wine, but in Ireland, where grapes do not grow, from ale. The monks who first carried out this experiment wanted alcohol for medical purposes because the monks in those days were also the physicians.Inevitably, the alcohol was tasted, and though at that time it must have been harsh in flavour, the feeling of well-being and warmth it created could not be missed. At first, it was flavoured with spices, notably saffron, which gave it a beautiful yellow/orange colour. Later it was discovered that storage in an oak cask not only produced the amber colour of whiskey today but did wonderful things to the taste. From then onwards, all additions other than water to adjust the alcoholic strength and some caramel to standardise colouring were prohibited by law.Whiskey distilleries were recognised by their chimneys indicating their voracious use of fossil fuels, but today distilleries are being converted to be 100% fossil-fuel-free and still produce the same beautiful amber liquid.

Half A World Away: A Mollydooker In A Wobbly
Australia is a land of contradictions – nationalistic, competitive, superficially welcoming and casually racist – a ‘Garden of Eden’ forever teetering on the edge of the next natural disaster. A country built on wave upon wave of economic migrants governed by politicians that have repeatedly adopted immigration policies designed to be racially selective. The author and his wife undertook a 40,000 km journey visiting the remote Outback, small country towns and the cities of ‘The Lucky Country’ and discovered an alien land, simultaneously frightening and familiar – a country living in a parallel universe half a world away from the glossy brochures and television commercials produced by Tourism Australia. Despite these contradictions, they also discovered a country of breathtaking beauty with charming people in possession of an infectious informality. This is the real Australia viewed through a pair of squinted eyes able to highlight both the absurd and the wonderful.
